Reading Practice: Passage 1 - The Psychology of Color
The Psychology of Color in Marketing
Color psychology is the study of how colors affect perceptions and behaviors. In marketing and branding, color is often used to persuade or influence consumers. Research has shown that up to 90% of snap judgments made about products can be based on color alone, depending on the product.
Different colors evoke different emotional responses. Red, for example, creates a sense of urgency and increases heart rate, which is why it is often used for clearance sales. Blue conveys trust, security, and stability, making it popular among banks and insurance companies. Green is associated with health, tranquility, and nature, and is commonly used to promote eco-friendly products.
However, the impact of color is not universal. Cultural differences play a significant role in color perception. While white represents purity and innocence in Western cultures, it is associated with mourning in many Eastern cultures. Similarly, yellow signifies joy and happiness in most Western countries but can represent cowardice or caution in others.
The most effective use of color in marketing involves understanding the target audience and the context. A study found that the relationship between brand and color hinges on the perceived appropriateness of the color being used for the particular brand. In other words, does the color fit what is being sold? This concept of appropriateness is more important than the individual color itself.
Furthermore, gender differences in color preference have been well-documented. Studies indicate that blue is the most popular color among both men and women, while purple tends to be more favored by women. Men generally prefer bold colors, while women prefer softer colors. These preferences should be considered when designing marketing campaigns targeting specific demographics.

Reading Practice: Passage 2 - Ancient Navigation
Ancient Navigation Techniques
Long before the invention of the magnetic compass, ancient mariners successfully navigated vast oceans using sophisticated techniques and environmental cues. Polynesian navigators, who colonized the Pacific Islands over a thousand years ago, are particularly renowned for their wayfinding abilities.
These skilled navigators used a technique called "wayfinding," which relied on observing the stars, sun, moon, and ocean swells. They memorized the positions of over 200 stars and understood how their paths changed with latitude. By reading the patterns of waves and swells, they could detect islands beyond the horizon, as the presence of land disrupts the regular patterns of ocean swells.
The Vikings, who traversed the North Atlantic from Scandinavia to North America, employed different methods. They used sunstones—crystals that polarize light—to locate the sun's position on cloudy days. They also observed the flight patterns of birds, which return to land at dusk, and followed the migration routes of whales.
In the Indian Ocean, Arab traders developed the kamal, a simple wooden device that measured the altitude of the pole star to determine latitude. This tool remained in use for centuries and was remarkably accurate for its simplicity.
These ancient techniques demonstrate a profound understanding of the natural world. While modern GPS has made navigation seemingly effortless, the knowledge and skills of these early navigators represent remarkable human ingenuity and observation.

Reading Practice: Passage 3 - Artificial Intelligence
The Future of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transitioned from science fiction to an integral part of modern life. From virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa to complex algorithms driving financial markets, AI systems now influence decisions that affect millions of people daily. As we stand on the brink of what many experts call the "fourth industrial revolution," understanding the trajectory of AI development is crucial.
Current AI systems, often referred to as "narrow AI," excel at specific tasks but lack general intelligence. They can defeat world champions at chess or Go, recognize faces with superhuman accuracy, and translate languages in real-time. However, these systems operate within defined parameters and cannot transfer knowledge between domains the way humans do.
The next frontier is Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)—systems with human-like cognitive abilities. While some researchers believe AGI is decades away, others warn it could emerge within years. The development of AGI raises profound ethical questions about autonomy, consciousness, and the nature of intelligence itself.
Questions 11-15: Summary Completion
Artificial Intelligence has become an essential part of modern 11 , affecting decisions that impact millions. Current AI systems are known as 12 AI because they specialize in specific tasks rather than possessing general intelligence.
These systems can perform specific functions like playing chess or 13 languages, but they cannot transfer knowledge between different areas. The next goal in AI development is creating 14 , which would have cognitive abilities similar to humans.
The development of advanced AI raises important 15 questions about autonomy and consciousness.

Sample Answer (Band 8-9):
The line graph illustrates changes in average global temperatures over a 120-year period from 1900 to 2020, measured in degrees Celsius relative to a baseline average.
Overall, the data reveals a clear upward trend in global temperatures, with particularly rapid warming occurring in the latter half of the period. While fluctuations were relatively modest in the early decades, the late 20th and early 21st centuries saw dramatic increases.
In 1900, the global temperature anomaly stood at approximately -0.2°C, indicating slightly cooler conditions than the historical average. This figure remained relatively stable for the first three decades, with minor fluctuations between -0.3°C and -0.1°C. A noticeable warming trend began around 1930, with temperatures gradually climbing to reach roughly 0.1°C by 1950.
The most striking changes occurred after 1970, when the warming trend accelerated significantly. Temperatures rose from approximately 0.0°C in 1970 to about 0.4°C by 1990. The final three decades witnessed the steepest increase, with the anomaly surging to nearly 1.0°C by 2010 and continuing to climb to approximately 1.2°C by 2020, representing the highest temperatures recorded in the entire period.

Sample Question: Complaint Letter
You recently stayed at a hotel for a business trip. However, you were dissatisfied with the service.
Write a letter to the hotel manager. In your letter:
- Explain the purpose of your stay
- Describe the problems you experienced
- Say what action you would like the hotel to take
Letter Structure
Tone Guide:
Sample Answer (Formal Complaint):
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the service I received during my stay at your hotel from 15th to 18th March this year. I was visiting your city for an important business conference and chose your establishment based on its reputation for excellence.
Unfortunately, several issues marred my experience. Firstly, despite requesting a non-smoking room, I was allocated a room that clearly smelled of smoke. When I requested a change, the reception staff were unhelpful and informed me that the hotel was fully booked. Additionally, the Wi-Fi connection in my room was extremely unreliable, which severely disrupted my ability to prepare for my presentations. Furthermore, the room service order I placed on my second evening arrived cold and incomplete, and when I called to complain, no apology was offered.
Given these circumstances, I believe I am entitled to a partial refund of 50% of my accommodation costs. I have attached copies of my receipts and would appreciate a response within fourteen days. Should I not hear from you by 30th April, I will have no alternative but to escalate this matter to the Consumer Protection Agency.
I look forward to your prompt reply.
Yours faithfully,
John Anderson

Writing Task 2: Sample Essays
Opinion Essay
While it is sometimes thought that extending prison terms is the most effective deterrent for criminal activity, I strongly disagree with this view and believe that rehabilitation and education are more sustainable solutions.
The primary reason why longer sentences fail to reduce crime is that they do not address the root causes of criminal behavior. Many offenders come from disadvantaged backgrounds with limited access to education and employment opportunities. Simply isolating them from society for extended periods does not equip them with the skills necessary to lead productive lives upon release. For instance, Scandinavian countries like Norway focus heavily on rehabilitation rather than punishment, resulting in some of the lowest recidivism rates globally despite shorter average prison terms.
Furthermore, investing in education and social programs has proven more cost-effective than maintaining large prison populations. When at-risk youth are provided with quality education and vocational training, they are less likely to engage in criminal activities. Community-based initiatives that offer mentorship and job placement services have shown remarkable success in preventing first-time offenses and helping ex-convicts reintegrate into society.
In conclusion, although lengthy prison sentences may provide temporary public safety, they are ultimately ineffective in reducing crime rates. Governments should prioritize preventive measures and rehabilitation programs to create safer communities in the long term.
Discussion Essay
While wealth certainly provides the means to assist others, I believe that the most significant advantage of being rich extends beyond philanthropy to include personal freedom and security.
There is no denying that affluent individuals have unique opportunities to make positive impacts on society. Billionaires like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have donated billions to healthcare, education, and poverty alleviation, potentially saving millions of lives. This ability to effect large-scale change is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding aspects of wealth. Moreover, rich people can support their immediate families and communities, providing educational opportunities and financial security to loved ones.
However, I would argue that the greatest benefit of wealth is the autonomy it provides. Financial independence allows individuals to make life choices based on passion rather than necessity. They can pursue careers they find fulfilling, travel extensively to broaden their perspectives, and access the best healthcare and education without financial stress. This freedom from economic anxiety contributes significantly to overall well-being and life satisfaction.
In conclusion, while the capacity to help others is a valuable aspect of wealth, I believe that personal freedom and security are equally, if not more, important benefits. The ideal use of wealth combines both personal fulfillment and social responsibility.

The book explores several fascinating concepts, such as the Cognitive Revolution that occurred about 70,000 years ago when humans developed the ability to communicate about abstract concepts. It also discusses the Agricultural Revolution and how the invention of farming actually made life more difficult for most people, despite increasing food production.
I decided to read it because several friends had recommended it to me, and I kept seeing it on bestseller lists. I was also going through a phase where I was interested in anthropology and understanding human behavior better.
I absolutely loved this book because it completely changed my perspective on so many aspects of life. For example, Harari argues that many of the things we take for granted, like money, nations, and human rights, are actually just 'shared fictions' or stories we've collectively agreed to believe in. This was mind-blowing to me. The writing style is also very accessible and engaging, despite dealing with complex academic concepts.
Overall, I'd highly recommend it to anyone interested in understanding our species better. It's the kind of book that makes you see the world differently after reading it."
